International Scholars

The 2019 International Summer School on Public Policy Venezia-Padova will feature three distinguished international scholars:

Susana Borrás is Professor at the Department of Organization at Copenhagen Business School (CBS), Denmark. She conducts research on the interaction between governance and innovation. As a social scientist focusing on public policy, her specific research interests are in the field of innovation policy. One of her leading questions is, what governments can do to foster socio-technical innovation in the economy, and how research and innovation policy can be designed to more problem-solving addressing grand challenges. Understanding that governmental action is embedded in a governance context, issues of market dynamics, social legitimacy, policy learning, as well as organizational and analytical capacity are inescapable questions for transformative innovation.

Over the last two decades Susana Borrás has advised governments and institutions at international and national levels on matters of science, technology and innovation policy. She is currently member of the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences (ATV), and Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Centre for European Studies, Sciences-Po Paris, France.

She has a solid teaching experience at all levels of the university system: undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels.  She has published extensively in international high-ranked journals and publishers. Her most recent book is “Holistic Innovation Policy: Theoretical Foundations, Policy Problems and Instrument Choices” 2019, Oxford University Press, with Charles Edquist. 

Claudio M. Radaelli is Professor of Public Policy at University College London, School of Public Policy, where he teaches Theories and Actors in the Policy Process in the MSc in Public Policy. He is the author of 80 scientific articles and 18 authored, co-authored and edited books and special issues of political science journals. Prior to joining UCL, Claudio was Professor of Political Science and
Director of the Centre for European Governance at the University of Exeter (2004-2018) and Professor of Public Policy at the University of Bradford, where he started his academic career. In 2014 he was full-time IdEx chair at the Centre Emile Durkheim at the University of Bordeaux, and before that part-time Professor at the University of Agder (Kristiansand) and Sciences-Po Paris. Claudio was also honorary Adjunct Professor in Political Science at the University of Copenhagen for four years and part-time Professor the European University Institute. Claudio is visiting Professor at the College of Europe in Bruges. He holds a BA in Economics and Social Sciences (Bocconi University) and a PhD in Political Science (Florence). Before starting his academic career, Claudio worked for seven years in research institutes, consultancy firms and associations of firms in Milan and Rome.

Eva Thomann is a Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Exeter. Previously, she has held research positions at the University of Bern, the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research, the University of Heidelberg, and the European University Institute in Florence. She completed her PhD in Public Administration at the University of Bern in 2015 and has worked in policy consultancy from 2009-2015. Eva Thomann specializes in public policy and public administration. Her research interests include policy implementation, Europeanization, behavioral public policy and administration, and case-oriented and set-theoretic methodology. Empirically, she has mainly worked on public health, food safety, migrant and welfare policy. In addition to her monograph “Customized implementation of European Union food safety policy: United in diversity?” (Palgrave, 2019), her research appeared in renowned international peer-reviewed journals including the European Journal of Political Research, the Journal of European Public Policy, the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Policy Studies Journal, Sociological Methods & Research, Governance, the Journal of Public Policy, and Public Administration. She is a member of the steering committee of the COMPArative Methods for Systematic cross-caSe analysis (COMPASSS) network, co-chair of the Permanent Study Group on Public Policy of the European Group for Public Administration, and she teaches set-theoretic methods at various international method schools.
